Iowa stocks gained 5 percent in November, outpacing market
By and large, shareholders of Iowa companies were rewarded in November.
Stock price gains by a majority of the 22 Iowa-based companies that we track led to a healthy 5.1 percent average increase for the Iowa Index in November. The 22-stock index is a subset of the 36 publicly traded stocks of local interest tracked monthly by the Business Record.
The Iowa Index outpaced the larger market indexes by a wide margin in November. By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average was up just one-third of 1 percent, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 1.1 percent.
Overall, 27 of the 36 companies that we track had positive gains for the month, with four companies’ stocks achieving double-digit gains in share price.
Among the top performers, Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc. gained 15.5 percent for the month, up $3.18. Renewable Energy Group Inc. had a 14.2 percent increase, up $1.12. Workiva Inc. picked up a 13.1 percent increase, or $2.17. And Flexsteel Industries Inc.’s stock price was up $4.49 for the month, a 10.3 percent gain.
Iowa stocks that dipped in November represented a range of industries, from publishing to manufacturing and financial services companies. Lee Enterprises Inc. had the largest negative change in share price, down 11 percent.
