More than 500,000 voters cast ballots in Iowa’s primary on Tuesday, blowing past the last turnout record of 449,490 Iowans in 1994, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s office announced on Wednesday. Due to the pandemic, the state sent an absentee ballot request form to every voter in 2020 with a deadline to mail ballots by June 1. The record is a marked jump from previous years: Turnout for primaries was recorded at 289,852 in 2018 and 207,596 in 2016, the last presidential year.
