The Iowa trucking industry pays more than $561 million in federal and state roadway taxes, a new report notes. The Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation and the American Transportation Research Institute said the $16,000 per rig is in addition to typical taxes paid by all businesses. On average, trucks drive 3.8 billion miles on public roads in Iowa and pay 43 percent of all taxes owed by Iowa motorists, while accounting for 11 percent of vehicle miles traveled in Iowa, said Brenda Neville, president of the Iowa Motor Truck Association. The association supports increased fuel taxes to ensure good road conditions.
