Iowa added tens of thousands of jobs monthly last summer, but employment in the state has only increased by 5,700 in the seven-month stretch ending in May. During that period, the national economy recovered four times faster than Iowa’s. Though still the 10th-lowest in the country, Iowa’s unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in May from 3.8% in April.
