A survey of Iowa small businesses found that 80 percent want a statutory limit on the growth of property taxes, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said today in a news release. “The property tax is the largest tax for most small businesses, and Iowa has a particularly unbalanced system that inhibits economic growth,” said Kristin Failor, executive director of the NFIB in Iowa. “This has to be the year that we deal with property taxes in a meaningful and permanent way. We just can’t be competitive as long as we have the highest property taxes in the region.” Gov. Terry Branstad and Democrat and Republican leaders in the Iowa Legislature have said that changing the state’s commercial property tax structure will be a priority when the 85th General Assembly convenes Jan. 14.
