Beginning today, free federal tax preparation and e-filing software will be available to all Americans with a 2015 adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less, the Internal Revenue Service announced. The software is provided through theFree File Alliance, a coalition of 14 industry-leading tax software companies that have partnered with the IRS. Approximately 70 percent of taxpayers have adjusted gross income below $60,000 and are eligible for the program, the IRS said in a release. Starting Jan. 20, Free File will also offer its basic federal e-filing services with no income limitations. Called Free File Fillable Forms, the basic service allows taxpayers who are familiar with tax law and need no preparation assistance to complete and file their federal income tax electronically. More than 43 million returns have been filed through Free File since the IRS began the program in 2003. Free File is available online.
