Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Polk County is highlighting the importance of children’s early literacy and language development by offering two free online programs, both beginning in mid-April. The “Our Bookshelf” program helps parents and caregivers of preschoolers learn and apply literacy techniques while engaging in shared reading activities, and “Small Talk” focuses on teaching parents with infants or toddlers how to improve the quantity and quality of parent-child talk. Participants are asked to pre-register and will receive books to go along with their learning. “Our Bookshelf and Small Talk help participants with young children establish those early literacy and language skills that set a solid foundation for later learning,” said Michelle Schott, family well-being educator for ISU Extension in Polk County. Parents and caregivers interested in Our Bookshelf must register online by April 8. Registration is currently full for the upcoming sessions of Small Talk; however, interested participants can be placed on a waitlist by calling 515-664-8272.
