Barbara Mack, an Iowa State University journalism professor and former general counsel for the Des Moines Register & Tribune Co., died early this morning, the Iowa State Daily reported.

Her husband, Jim Giles, found Mack unresponsive in her home early this morning, and efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

A 1974 Iowa State graduate in journalism, Mack earned a law degree from Drake University in 1977 and worked at the Register & Tribune Co. from 1969 to 1987.

She was a mentor, friend and teacher to countless Iowa State journalists for more than two decades and is perhaps best known for her rigorous media law and ethics classes.
