Iowa State University police will wear body cameras as part of new safety initiatives announced today by ISU President Steven Leath. The new policy will require all officers to wear body cameras while on duty that will be activated during calls for service and other law enforcement action. ISU Police Interim Chief Aaron DeLashmutt said the goal is to create greater transparency and accountability between police and community members. Officers are testing the cameras now in a pilot phase. Additionally, ISU police will launch a new mobile app this fall that will enable students, faculty, staff and visitors to request a safety escort via their smartphones. A third initiative is expansion of the ISU Police Department’s Multicultural Liaison Officer program, which provides outreach to underrepresented students, faculty and staff.
