ISU students taking the event management capstone class in two weeks will pitch new event concepts to raise breast cancer awareness to Susan G. Komen Iowa, the local branch of the global organization leading the fight against breast cancer.
“Working hand in hand with Iowa State University and its students is critical for us in our effort to continually engage our constituent base,” Derek Johnson, special events coordinator with Susan G. Komen Iowa, said in a release.
In mid-October, more than 70 event management students in 12 teams will pitch ideas for potential events to representatives of Komen Iowa. Student pitches include event ideas such as online auctions, pop-up events, escape room events and food truck bazaars. The students incorporated concepts from their class into their ideas. Many of the students also have relevant internship experience.
The Race for the Cure, tol be held Saturday, Oct. 3, drew about 10,000 people last year, forming a sea of pink on and around the grounds of the Iowa Capitol.
This is the third semester that ISU’s event management capstone class has partnered with an Iowa nonprofit. Past partnerships have been with Ames Community Arts Council and United Way of Story County.
“It’s always a win-win,” said Eric Olson, an assistant professor who teaches the class. “Students get that practical experience; it’s much more interactive. A nonprofit gets the expertise of my students and their different concepts of what would attract their peers to either contribute money or to become more aware of actual nonprofit organizations.”
