Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa students, faculty and community members will hold campus rallies today and Thursday to call on 2016 presidential candidates to support a national goal of debt-free college at public institutions of higher education. “Student debt constrains our career choices and prevents people from innovating in the marketplace, saving for retirement, and starting families,” said Logun Buckley, a senior at UNI. “That’s bad for students and bad for America’s economy.”  The two Iowa schools are among 10 colleges holding events organized by local students and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which has 6,800 Iowa members. A policy paper by the think tank Demos and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, “National Goal of Debt-Free College in America: A Blueprint” describes how the goal could be achieved through a combination of federal aid to states, more aid to students and innovation that reduces the underlying costs of college.
