The series of outdoor concerts had vanished after its 35th season in 2017 when the Metro Arts Alliance disbanded after nearly 42 years of supporting arts in the community. The organization had struggled financially.
Robert Warren, executive director of Hoyt Sherman Place, said Principal Foundation gave a $25,000 Strong Communities Major Gifts Grant for the Jazz in July program. That foundation also awarded $15,000 in general operating support to the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation, noting Hoyt Sherman’s “managerial excellence and outstanding community outreach programming.”
“The Principal Financial funding will support a series of three free summer jazz concerts on the Hoyt Sherman Place lawn in July of 2019 and 2020,” Warren told board members. “The Jazz in July series is a great fit for our mission to ‘serve all residents of Central Iowa’ and our more recent goal of re-engaging the front lawn.”
Warren said there is also discussion with organizers of other jazz events that could move some concerts to Hoyt Sherman.
He said the lineup for 2019 will be announced in the next few months. The original Jazz in July featured outdoor concerts around the metro.
