The city of Johnston is asking for public comment on a mixed-use redevelopment area that includes City Hall and has been under consultants’ microscopes for the last year. The plan focuses on roughly 30 acres east of Merle Hay Road between Northwest 62nd Avenue and Northwest 63rd Place. It is called the Merle Hay Road Town Center area, where the city has worked with Confluence landscape architects and urban planners and Leland Consulting Group to identify the most suitable redevelopment efforts. “This redevelopment plan provides a clear vision for a walkable, mixed-use town center with a cohesive small-town feel,” Adam Plagge, the city’s economic development manager, said in a release. “Right now, Johnston does not have an area where visitors and residents can gather for events, go shopping and enjoy a nice meal with their family, and this area has a vision to provide all of that in one central location.” Before the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council adopt the plan, the city is asking for public comment. Informational kiosks are on display at City Hall and the Johnston Public Library. City staff is also available to meet with or make presentations on the plan to local business and community groups. The market study and design guidelines are available here.
