July mixed bag for Iowa stocks
Eleven Iowa-based stocks recorded gains in July, as the Iowa Index of stock prices ticked upward by 1.61% over June. Ten of the 21 Iowa-based companies in the Iowa Index ended July with a decline in price.
Looking at all 36 stocks of both Iowa-based companies and those with a significant presence in the state, the top price gainers in July were Gannett Co. Inc., NewLink Genetics and MidWest One Financial Group Inc., with share prices rising 25.61%, 19.59% and 11.12%, respectively.
New Media Investment Group announced Monday that it had reached a deal to acquire Gannett, which owns USA Today and more than 100 her daily publications, including the Des Moines Register and the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Stocks with the biggest price declines in July were KemPharm Inc., down 28.00%, Renewable Energy Group Inc., down 14.31%, and Green Plains Renewable Energy, down 6.40%.
July’s gain of 1.61% for the Iowa Index — an unweighted average price of 21 Iowa-based publicly traded companies — landed between the performances of the Nasdaq and Dow Jones indexes, which were up 2.11% and 0.99% respectively, in July.
The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
