Juneteenth group plans week of events, movie ‘Hidden Figures’ tonight at Valley West
Iowa Juneteenth Observance is hosting a week full of events to commemorate Juneteenth ending this Saturday, June 19, including the Community Builders Appreciation Banquet, the Black Art Juneteenth Ball and a Neighbor’s Day festival with music and food at Western Gateway Park. An outdoor showing of the movie “Hidden Figures” will take place today at 7:30 p.m. at Valley West Mall; more information on the week’s schedule of events and tickets is available online. Juneteenth is the annual celebration of June 19, 1865, the day a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that slavery had been abolished two years earlier through the Emancipation Proclamation. In Iowa, Juneteenth is officially observed on the third Saturday in June.
