No label fits me quite as well as “reporter”: It’s just a handy excuse to be curious.

I joined the Business Record in February 2018 to take on its expanding focus on technology and innovation in the Des Moines tech/startup community — you’ll most often find me behind innovationIOWA, our weekly e-newsletter, as well as other daily/weekly offerings.

My background is a little unconventional for tech reporting, but innovation is a pretty unconventional beat. Originally from Indianola, I’m returning to Central Iowa after nearly three years as a reporter at the daily Charles City Press in Charles City, where I focused on education and arts/entertainment in Floyd County and neighboring counties.

My main joy there was coordinating the monthly speaker series Cedar Talks: Charles City, a free event hosted at the local pub that brought professors and experts in to lead discussions on constitutional challenges behind the news headlines of the day. In my free time, I tried the pottery wheel at the Charles City Arts Center — my second favorite challenge.

Outside journalism and creative messes, I’m passionate about traveling, reading, dogs and news/media literacy education.
