Kick It Forward, a nonprofit seeking to make soccer more accessible for kids and adults, announced it has received approval for a second modular futsal court to be installed in Iowa. The Pleasant Hill City Council voted unanimously on May 26 to approve the project, which will be located at Sunrise Park. The modular system, which accommodates a compact version of soccer called futsal, was approved by the Des Moines City Council in November for Birdland Sports Park. The Musco Lighting Mini-Pitch System — valued at about $100,000 and being donated by Kick It Forward to the city of Pleasant Hill — is expected to be installed early next month. Built at Musco’s Oskaloosa plant, the system comes with lighting, fencing, goals and benches, and will be assembled in less than one week. The Pleasant Hill installation will also include basketball hoops above the goals. Futsal is a smaller version of soccer, typically played on a hard surface with size dimensions similar to a basketball court. Matt Sahag, Kick It Forward’s founder and president, said it’s vital to provide safer places to play soccer and eliminate barriers. Kick It Forward seeks to raise funds and build an additional 10 courts over the next 12 months, with the next two planned in Lamoni. The nonprofit is currently in discussions with Des Moines Parks and Recreation officials for two additional Des Moines locations, at Evelyn Davis Park and Cheatom Park, Sahag said.
