Kinship Brewing Co. in Waukee announced it will host Fighting Through Kinship, a breast cancer awareness 5K Fun Run Walk, on Oct. 10. The event, sponsored by the Iowa Clinic, is being launched by the company as an annual event after one of its brewers, 27-year-old Jess Mitchell, was diagnosed six months ago with the breast cancer gene BRCA 2. Due to early testing from the Iowa Clinic, Mitchell was able to receive the necessary surgery to continue a positive quality of life. Proceeds will benefit three organizations: Can Do Cancer, Bras for the Cause and American Cancer Society Real Men Wear Pink. “While the past few months have been difficult, I am so lucky to have received the care and support I have,” Mitchell said. “I hope by being an advocate and helping host this event we will raise awareness for a cause that is so prevalent.” To learn more about her story and to participate, visit www.kinshipbeer.com/5k/.
