Kum & Go intends to close its urban, walk-up convenience store in downtown Des Moines’ Edna M. Griffin Building, according to a report by Axios Des Moines. A company spokesperson said Kum & Go’s last urban concept store will close on March 24, according to the article. The announcement comes less than seven months after the Utah-based convenience store chain Maverik acquired Kum & Go from the Des Moines-headquartered Krause Group for an undisclosed sum. Kum & Go opened the 3,000-square-foot, walk-up store at 319 Seventh St. in May 2020 that company officials said at the time would cater to people working in the two-block area surrounding the store. The closure comes as Maverik has started to roll out changes to the company, including ending its made-to-order food program. Mitch Morrison wrote in the convenience store trade news website CSP in January, citing an anonymous source, that by 2025, all 400 Kum & Go stores would be rebranded as Maveriks. Michelle Monson, Maverik’s communications and corporate social responsibility director, told the Business Record in January that “Maverik has not announced any confirmed plans outside of rebranding stores in existing Maverik markets but please feel free to check back for updates!”
