Closing the University of Iowa’s 67-year-old Labor Center is projected to save $95,041 this budget year, about a fifth of the more than $550,000 in total savings that will come as contracts wind down, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports. Employment contracts with the center’s five furloughed staffers required extended notification periods. UI announced the Labor Center’s closure in July, along with six other expected cuts the university attributed to persistent legislative funding cuts.
