The president and programs chair of The Pet Project Midwest has a new venture to help local shelter animals, and all it takes is purchasing a bag of dog food.

Sara Henderson recently launched BOGO Bowl, which will soon go national. The new enterprise sells seven types of dog food online and contributes food to shelter partners all around the country.

The concept of BOGO Bowl is simple: Buy one, give one.

When a customer purchases a bag of food from BOGO Bowl, a second bag is donated to a shelter of the customer’s choice at no extra cost.

Henderson said prices are similar to those of premium dog food brands and range from about $41 to $63 for a 20-pound bag.

Henderson got the idea for the business while working with Pet Project and seeing that there is a constant need for food, which helps shelters keep costs down so that fewer animals need to be euthanized.

The food is high quality, made with protein first and fruits and vegetables and doesn’t include artificial fillers, she said. Each bag of food is produced in Ohio, and for most who order online, the food can be delivered to their door and to the shelter of their choice.

The business is already operating in Des Moines, and residents can purchase bags of puppy formula and maintenance formula at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Henderson recently traveled around the country talking to shelters in hopes to partner with them. Once the company launches a website in July, BOGO Bowl will go national and people across the United States will be able to purchase food and donate to their local shelters.

She said in some bigger markets where Bogo Bowl hopes to partner with multiple shelters, customers will have the option to choose to donate the food to a specific shelter or have their donation given to “any that need it.”

Once the company’s site is online, people will also be able to purchase more varieties of dog food.

So far, the business has been able to donate 1,500 bowls of food to the Animal Rescue League and has received a positive response, Henderson said.
