Five registered nurses at state-owned facilities have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state of Iowa, alleging that the state failed to pay them proper overtime wages, Iowa Public Radio reported. The lawsuit, filed in Polk County District Court at the end of June, states the nurses have not been paid time-and-a-half for overtime work in the past two years. The plaintiffs accuse the state of intentionally underpaying nurses for overtime work in violation of state and federal labor laws. The five nurses work for facilities run by the Department of Corrections and the Department of Human Services. If a judge approves the lawsuit as a class action, other registered nurses employed by the state could join.
