Let’s celebrate the 80-plus women on Iowa’s November election ballots

In a recent gubernatorial debate, candidate John Norris offered this advice: “Put more women in charge.”

Voters didn’t nominate Norris in Tuesday’s primary, nor did they choose either of the women who raised their hands on the debate stage when he made that remark. But voters did take Norris’ advice, resulting in the nomination of more than 80 Democratic, Republican and Libertarian women to run for state and federal offices in November’s general election.

Voters should vote for candidates based on what they stand for, not how they look in a skirt and heels. But it is better for our democracy if voices coming from more than half the population are heard in the halls of government, writes the Des Moines Register editorial board.
