In addition, site elevations are set so that site work can begin this spring, according to Matt Brown, president of Formation Group, the project’s manager.

A building permit valued at $25 million was issued for the project in early November.

LifeServe Blood Center, now at 431 E. Locust St. in Des Moines, plans on moving its operations into the new two-story facility in 2024. The donor center, laboratory and supply area will be on the building’s first floor; executive offices will be on the second floor.

The building’s south side, which will be composed mostly of glass, will face Johnston Drive. The east end, which will include a balcony, will overlook vegetation and trees.

Supply chain challenges, which have slowed construction projects nationwide for the past two years, have not impeded the LifeServe project, Emily Kistner, a Formation Group project manager, wrote in an email.

“There are certainly long lead time items, but the team has been able to work within the parameters of the current schedule,” she wrote.
