Anawim Housing appoints executive director: Anawim Housing recently appointed Cynthia Latcham as the organization’s executive director. Latcham was promoted to this new position within the organization after serving as director of programs and services for Anawim Housing for the past three years. Russ Frazier will remain president of Anawim Housing and Allterra Property Solutions, Anawim’s property management company, while Latcham will be in charge of Anawim’s daily operations. Latcham assumed her new role in June.
Spratt to chair Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission: Christine Spratt, general manager and vice president of Golden Eagle Distributing in Mount Pleasant, is the new chairperson of the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission effective July 1, the commission announced this week. The commission partners with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division administrator to provide insight and advice regarding public policy and business decisions.
Bunker Labs to open Des Moines chapter: Bunker Labs, a national nonprofit organization that helps veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs, will celebrate the official opening of its Des Moines chapter with a virtual launch party on July 7. The mission of Bunker Labs is to inspire veterans and veteran spouses to start their own business by providing them proper support, resources and connections. Women Lead Change launches podcast: Women Lead Change debuted a new podcast on June 26. Called “Own It!,” the podcast will feature thought leaders, industry experts, CEOs and other senior leaders on the importance of advancing women leaders at all levels. The inaugural episode featured the origin story of IWLC, now called Women Lead Change, with former CEO Diane Ramsey. The podcast can be found here and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Stitcher.
UI council for women airs concerns about disproportionate layoffs: The University of Iowa’s Council on the Status of Women is airing concerns over the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ commitment to diversity after learning 12 of its 15 layoffs were women — including three women of color, two first-generation college students and at least two single mothers. College Dean Steve Goddard said state law prevented the college’s executives from considering race, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity in deciding whom to cut this summer.

In 1960, Madeline McWhinney Dale became the first female officer of the Federal Reserve Bank; later, she was president of the First Women’s Bank, the first bank largely owned and operated by women. The trailblazing banker died at 98 on June 19.
NASA announced it will rename its headquarters building Mary W. Jackson, a “Hidden Figure” who started working at the space agency in the 1950s and became its first female African American engineer.
