On Thursday President Joe Biden signed an executive order for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to reopen the open enrollment period for healthcare.gov from Feb. 15 through May 15. Open enrollment on the federal exchanges, which the Trump administration cut in half to six weeks, ended on Dec. 15. Jeremy Smith, program director for Iowa Navigator, a nonprofit enrollment assistance group, said getting help signing up is important, as many people are overwhelmed by the options or may not realize how to shop for affordable health coverage. “More than 59,000 Iowa residents enrolled in a health insurance plan during open enrollment, but we know there are thousands of families out there that still need coverage,” Smith said. Anyone in Iowa can call 515-978-9570 to reserve a telephone appointment with the Navigator program to get free enrollment assistance. More information is available at www.acanavigator.com.
