Live/work lofts near capacity
All but four of the live/work lofts in East Village Square between Grand Avenue and Locust Street on East Fourth Street are leased. The tenants will bring an eclectic mix of products and services to the area, including Asian videos, massage therapy, and health products, in addition to the gift, jewelry and art stores already open.
Dana Barrer will open Glass Shoppe Imports in one of the lofts on May 5. His store, which sells items from around the world including glasses from the Czech Republic, perfume bottles from Egypt and pottery from Poland, used to be in Southridge Mall, but Barrer decided to move when the store failed to attract new customers after three and a half years of being in business.
Barrer, who works full time as a bank manager for Wells Fargo Bank, said the loft space is a good size for displaying his products and the rent is reasonable. He plans to display more of his own photography and also add antiques. Barrer does not intend to live in the loft, but will use the living space for storage. He has not determined what hours he will be open, but is looking forward to not having to adhere to long mall hours.
Annie Brown of Perennial Property Management Services, which manages the building said she has had interest in the live/work lofts from several other people, but most of the inquiries have been from people who want to open a beauty shop, which the building’s plumbing cannot handle.
