Congressman Dave Loebsack this week called for the creation of a National Flood Center that could be located at the University of Iowa, the Environmental Focus blog reported. Appearing at the University of Iowa’s Stanley Hydraulics Laboratory as the anniversary of a massive 2008 flood approached, Loebsack said he will introduce the National Flood Research and Education Act, which would establish a consortium under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that would include colleges and universities. The goal would be “to advance the understanding of the causes of flooding, to conduct research on flooding, flood prevention and other flood-related issues.” The bill would not aim the center at the University of Iowa specifically, but Loebsack noted the university’s comprehensive work on flood modeling.
