Luther residents look to disband town

A months-old effort by residents of Luther to disincorporate the small town north of Madrid and near Boone is reaching a decision point, the Ames Tribune reported. A public hearing is planned this week, and soon a state panel will decide if the idea should be put up to a vote later this year. About half of the 120 residents petitioned to disband the town. They balked at the city government’s proposed sewer improvements, arguing they would be pricey and possibly ineffective. There’s another problem: Boone County officials say Luther’s streets don’t meet county standards and would need extensive repairs before the county would take over maintenance.
