Majority of Iowa Index stocks down in September

Only Casey’s General Stores Inc. recorded a double-digit stock price percentage gain in September, while most of the 22 companies with Iowa headquarters had modest price gains or declines last month. 

Seven Iowa-based companies had stock gains in the month, and 15 had stock losses. Three companies had double-digit losses. NewLink Genetics Corp. had a 22.90 percent loss, Flexsteel Industries Inc. had a 16.65 percent loss, and Winnebago Industries Inc. had a 10.28 percent loss.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 22 Iowa-based public companies, decreased by 3.18 percent from August and was up 0.66 percent on a year-over-year basis, the Business Record’s monthly snapshot of Iowa companies shows. 

The Dow Jones industrial average had a stronger showing in September, gaining 493.49 points in value, a 1.90 percent gain during the month and up 18.03 percent from September 2017. The Nasdaq had a weaker showing in September, losing 63.19 points in value, a 0.78 percent decrease during the month and up 23.873 percent from September 2017.  

The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
