March a bear month for majority of Iowa-based stocks

Three of 21 Iowa-based companies posted stock price gains for the month of March. Eighteen posted losses. 

Only one company posted a double-digit percentage gain: NewLink Genetics Corp. at 14.20%. The other two stocks that gained were Lee Enterprises Inc., up 8.20%, and Workiva Inc., up 2.53%.

Eight companies posted double-digit percentage losses. The two stocks with the largest percentage losses were KemPharm Inc. with a 25.78% loss and Renewable Energy Group Inc. with a 17.35% loss.

Arkansas-based Windstream Holdings Inc., which has operations in Iowa, was delisted from the Nasdaq March 6.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 21 Iowa-based public companies, decreased by 6.56% from March and was down 12.07% on a year-over-year basis. 

By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.05% during the month and increased 9.66% from a year ago. The Nasdaq composite gained 2.61% during March and increased 12.51% from a year ago. 

The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
