Mary Campos honored with Democratic Party award
Mary Campos (pictured), an activist for women and children’s rights, recently was presented with the Outstanding Supporter Hall of Fame Award by the Iowa Democratic Party. The award, given to Campos at the organization’s Hall of Fame dinner on June 23, recognizes her “steadfast dedication to Democratic ideals and activism.” In addition to her activism, Campos addressed social and health issues within the Latino community and assisted families in relocating to Iowa and obtaining their U.S. citizenship. Campos was the first Latina co-chair of the Iowa Brown-Black Presidential Forum and was awarded the Otlei award by the Mexican secretary of the interior in 2005. Campos is a member of the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame and is one of the founders of the Iowa Democratic Hispanic Caucus.
