Des Moines’ city staff and the public must wear a mask inside city facilities, according to a requirement implemented by City Manager Scott Sanders. The requirement also covers all people attending public meetings of the City Council and city boards and commissions. The mask requirement is in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention citing Polk County and 58 other Iowa counties as high transmission areas for the coronavirus and the delta variant. The masking requirement includes City Hall, libraries, Argonne Armory, Municipal Service Center, Public Works buildings, the Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority, police and fire departments, office locations for the Municipal Housing Agency, and the Civil and Human Rights Department at Polk County River Place and any other city buildings where employees work.
