Maverik – Adventure’s First Stop is not answering questions about its planned acquisition of Kum & Go, a spokesperson for the Utah-based convenience store wrote in an email.

Last week, Maverik, whose parent company is FJ Management, announced in a joint news release with Kum & Go that it was acquiring the Iowa-based convenience store chain.

The spokesperson today declined to say whether Maverik would retain the Kum & Go name or rebrand stores as Maverik – Adventure’s First Stop. The spokesperson also declined to say whether Maverik would retain all of Kum & Go’s more than 5,000 employees, including those who work in the corporate headquarters at the Krause Gateway Center in downtown Des Moines.

In August 2022, nearly 420 people worked out of the Krause Gateway Center, Carrie Kruse, an economic development coordinator for the city of Des Moines, wrote in an email. It’s not known how many of the workers were employed by Kum & Go, a subsidiary of Krause Group, which is also headquartered in the downtown office building.

Maverik has nearly 400 locations in 12 Western and Midwestern states. Kum & Go was established in Hampton in 1959. Four generations of the Krause family have operated the chain, which now includes over 430 stores in 13 states.

It’s not known when the acquisition will be finalized or the sale price of the deal. In February, Reuters reported that the Krause family was exploring options for Kum & Go, which was valued at close to $2 billion.
