Mercy College establishes new endowed scholarship fund with estate gift
Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines has received an estate gift of $240,500 that it will use to establish a new endowed scholarship fund for nursing students. Given by the late Suzanne Mains, a graduate and former director of the Mercy School of Nursing, the gift is the fifth-largest in the college’s history. The Mains Endowed Scholarship Fund will annually award two scholarships — one to a nursing student with a record of academic achievement at either the high school or college level, and the other to assist a nursing student with demonstrated financial need, as determined by the college. Mains spent the majority of her career at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, serving there for 40 years. “Suzanne exemplified the Mercy College values of helping all in our community succeed academically, even those without the means to do so,” said Mercy College President Douglas Fiore. “We thank Suzanne and her family for this generous gift that will uphold her legacy and provide meaningful scholarship in perpetuity.”
