Mercy will receive a site visit by the ANCC in September, the third and final step toward earning the designation.

Recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with “the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive,” according to the ANCC. Only 256 hospitals currently carry the designation. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City became Iowa’s first Magnet hospital in June 2004, followed by Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs and Genesis Medical Center in Davenport.
