MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center opens with focus on patient-centered cancer care

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to mark the opening of the MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center.
The new center will be Central Iowa’s first cancer care center where patients are seen within 48 hours to one week of their diagnosis, and will allow patients to meet with their cancer team at the same time and place.
Expanded services will aim to help patients at all stages of treatment, starting with integrative medicine options like acupuncture, massage therapy, and music and art therapy.
Ongoing support after a patient completes treatment is available through the center’s survivorship program. Those continuing their treatment as outpatients can also receive support services.
MercyOne first announced plans for the $16 million center in March 2020, which were based on Dr. Richard Deming’s ambition to bring multidisciplinary, patient-centered cancer care to Iowans.“I am beyond thrilled to see my vision for extraordinary cancer care come to life through this center,” Deming said in a release. “It is the culmination of 30 years of treating patients by viewing them as whole people, not just as cancer patients, by engaging with their psychological, emotional and spiritual dimensions.”
Deming will serve as medical director of the new center after spending 12 years as the medical director of the MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center. He has also been a radiation oncologist with MercyOne for more than 30 years.
The Deming Cancer Center is located in remodeled space at 411 Laurel St., on the existing MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center Campus. The clinical research office was also expanded in the remodel so it can facilitate more clinical trials.
