MercyOne’s chief medical executive, Dr. Hijinio Carreon, has been selected as a Chief Medical Executive to Know in 2022 by Becker’s Hospital Review. Carreon was the only Iowa-based health leader to be recognized among 88 health executives. In its announcement, Becker’s acknowledged the vital role of chief medical officers and executives, stating, “They are the link between physicians and administrators of hospitals and health systems. They bring an important clinical perspective to hospital decision-makers. The executives featured have achieved success with quality and patient safety as well as improving the patient experience.” Carreon began his career with MercyOne in 2007 as a physician at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and was chief medical officer of MercyOne’s Central Iowa region before being appointed chief medical executive and senior vice president of the health system in May 2021. A Drake graduate, Carreon completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Des Moines University with honors for both the National Medical Fellowship Scholar program and the DMU-Osteopathic Medical Center Minority Scholar program in 2003. He earned an Executive Master of Business Administration at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business in 2020.
