Merry Christmas, and a happy WiFi from Google

It isn’t even Thanksgiving yet, but Google is giving an early Christmas present to travelers this holiday season.

Google announced today it will offer free WiFi to travelers in 47 airports across the United States. The program, which allows airport travelers to browse the Internet from their personal computers, begins today and will be available until Jan. 15, 2010.

Google partnered with variety of traditional for-fee wireless providers including Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income and others to provide the service.

Des Moines International Airport is one of the 47 airports on the list. Other Midwest airports include Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Omaha and St. Louis. Airports such as Chicago O’Hare, Minneapolis-St. Paul and LAX in Los Angeles are not covered because Google’s partners do not have a presence in those facilities.

The FAA estimates that more than 100 million people will pass through the participating airports during the time period of the program. Google is using the free WiFi to tap into that market in an effort to push its new Google Chrome browser and its flagship Web site Google.com.

According to CNNMoney.com, when travelers sign in, they will be asked if they want to set Google.com as their homepage, and/or download its free Google Chrome browser. No credit card, login or e-mail will be required, according to Google, which said all users must do is select the complimentary WiFi option and accept the terms of service.

When travelers log on, they will have an option to make a donation to Engineers Without Borders, One Economy Corporation or the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. Google will then match donations made up to $250,000.
