MidAmerican Energy Co. will install automated meter-reading technology in residential customers’ homes and most business customers’ premises over the next three years.

The new meters will enable the company to remotely obtain energy usage information. They will be equipped with a radio transmitter capable of sending data to receivers in company vehicles. As these vehicles drive through an area, information will be transmitted to the receiver, which will then upload it to MidAmerican’s billing system.

The company said electric rates will not be affected by the installation of the new equipment. Iowa customers have not experienced a rate increase since 1995.

Customers will receive a letter from MidAmerican two to three weeks before installation of the new equipment is scheduled for their area.
