MPO launches e-scooter survey
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization wants your opinion on e-scooters, which may show up in a pilot project here. The survey runs through Jan. 19. “The technology is here, so how do we want to respond?” asked Todd Ashby, CEO and executive director of the MPO. “Do we want an e-scooter share program? What’s the best fit for our city and region? How do we address safety? What regulations are needed?” E-scooters have been both heavily used and controversial in other markets, particularly in cases where the stand-up, rechargeable scooters are left at random spots around streets and sidewalks. Some see the scooters as a draw for potential workers. Others raise safety concerns. The survey is part of a study by the MPO, Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART), the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Operation Downtown, and the Street Collective of Greater Des Moines. The city of Des Moines would have to approve regulations, and a recommendation to the City Council is expected early next year, with a possible pilot project in the summer, most likely including Des Moines.
