On Tuesday, 6th Avenue Corridor, the neighborhood development group dedicated to the revitalization of Sixth Avenue from Interstate 235 north to the Des Moines River, announced the launch of a monthly MultiCultural Market. The market will feature a diverse selection of ethnic and multicultural products, including textiles, artisan goods, food and more.
The goal of the market, according to 6th Avenue Corridor Executive Director Breann Bye, is to allow emerging entrepreneurs — many of whom may be new immigrants — “an opportunity to develop their businesses and establish a customer base.”
“Establishing the 6th Avenue Corridor MultiCultural Market is an incredibly exciting project for our organization,” Bye said in a news release. “Like our perennially popular Jazz in July, we also see this as an opportunity to invite newcomers to the 6th Avenue Corridor and showcase the vibrancy of our unique neighborhoods.”
The market will kick off Sunday, Aug. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Subsequent markets will be held Sept. 6, Oct. 4 and Nov. 1. All markets will be held in the grassy lot on the southwest corner of Sixth Avenue and Washington Avenue — land owned by 6th Avenue Corridor partner Neighborhood Development Corporation. The market will then close for the winter before reopening in May 2016.
