The Des Moines Music Coalition’s Music University will return this fall with a theme of building sustainable careers in music. The event, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23, at Drake University, will feature workshops, panel discussions, one-on-one consultation, speakers and other activities. Music industry experts both local and from across the country are scheduled to participate. This year’s Music University will be free to attend and will be open to all ages. There will also be a Music University showcase featuring artist, activist and educator Dessa and Open Mike Eagle at xBk Live that evening. The showcase is open to all ages, and tickets for that are $20. The Des Moines Music Coalition conducted a survey and analysis of the Des Moines music ecosystem in 2021, the results of which will be released in the coming weeks. Some early information from the survey showed that many musicians lost 60% of their income at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
