Interest groups, government agencies and businesses wined and dined Iowa lawmakers during this year’s legislative session, according to the Associated Press. According to new financial disclosure forms filed with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, $194,848 was spent on receptions, dinners and other social events during this year’s session.

More than 85 events were held during the 103-day session, with the Greater Des Moines Partnership ranking as one of the biggest spenders, shelling out $10,185 for an event at Prairie Meadow Racetrack and Casino. Other big events were hosted by the Iowa Business Council, which spent $8,826 entertaining lawmakers, and the Iowa Wholesale Beer Dealers Association, which sponsored a $9,138 reception.

State ethics and gift laws put limits on the amount of money that interest groups can spend entertaining lawmakers. However, those limits don’t apply when all legislators are invited.

This year’s spending is below last year’s, which was reported at $212,899 in a session that lasted a couple of weeks longer than this year’s. Disclosure reports from last year show 103 separate events.
