New augmented reality mural coming to downtown Des Moines

127 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and CultureThe Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation and Principal Financial Group are partnering to bring internationally acclaimed Dutch artist Leon Keer to Des Monies to paint an 8,000-plus-square-foot hyper-realistic mural at 901 Grand Ave. The artwork, featuring vintage televisions displaying Iowa landscapes in collaboration with regional organizations, will be animated via a free iOS app developed by the foundation that will add an augmented reality layer to the mural. The installation, which will be owned and maintained by Principal for at least six years, marks the first in a planned series of AR-compatible murals throughout the city, the foundation’s director Alexa McCarthy said in a news release. The mural and app will debut during the free Turn It On! Mural Festival on Oct. 18 from 1-3 p.m.
