New jazz and martini bar hopes to bring in booming suburbanites
Tini’s Jazz Martini Bar was the brainchild of Ron Walker of Urbandale. His hope was to get the jazz musicians he has always loved to add Central Iowa to their tour schedules.
He opened Tini’s at the end of December, offering an eclectic selection of martinis that includes more than 50 offerings. One of the more popular offerings is the Hopeless Romantic, made with Stoli Razberi vodka, strawberry daiquiri mix and lemonade, served with an orange slice.
The bar also offers Riesling, merlot, chardonnay and cabernet wines and six beers on tap, including 312, a microbrew out of Chicago.
Walker said he plans to have live music every other weekend. The bar hopes to attract bands and musicians from all over the country, perhaps on their way through Iowa from one large city venue to another.
In addition to the national and regional acts he hopes to attract to the Des Moines area, Walker also plans to feature local jazz musicians when possible.
The atmosphere, which is built on dim lighting, posh leather and velvet couches and jazz music floating in the background, was designed to be upscale. Its location, 1 1/2 blocks north of Interstate 80 next to Irwin’s Bike and Sports in Johnston, was chosen to cater to a growing part of Greater Des Moines with a lot of families and working-class people in their 30s and up. The space was formerly home to a children’s consignment clothing store.
Walker said the bar “caters to the 30-plus crowd,” with its relaxing, laid-back atmosphere.
Walker said the owners and manager of Tini’s have more than 20 years of experience in the bar industry and can provide patrons with the products and services that they expect from a high-quality establishment.
Tini’s does not serve food, and there is no non-smoking section.
Every day during the week, the bar offers different daily drink specials.
On Monday, a large martini (yes, they come in varying sizes) is the price of a small all night. On Tuesday, it’s two for one drinks. The rest of the week sees an extension of happy hour, with discounted prices on all drinks, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Tini’s is open 4 p.m.-2 a.m. daily.
