Eclectic furniture, one-of-a-kind antiques and vintage yet contemporary décor are the elements that create the ambience of Trieste, an interior design specialty store tucked into West Glen Town Center.

Trieste recently opened a 1,900-square-foot showroom to display large furniture pieces, as well as house a new design studio for independent designers working through the store.

“More than a fourth of the store is allocated to the design area where we can actually bring clients in and do presentations with them,” said Todd Cross, lead designer at Trieste. “Also, we are able to house some of the larger furniture pieces over here, because when people are buying pieces, they want to see them, sit on them, touch them, and feel them.”

The new location, which had been ready to open since January but

didn’t officially open until March, is located next to the other already-established Trieste store, which opened two years ago.

“It’s good news and bad news that we can be beside each other,” said Diane Young, owner and founder of Trieste. “It’s kind of bad news that every time we want something it’s over there, and every time they want something it’s over here. We’re trying to duplicate all our catalogues and files.”

Despite these minor inconveniences, Young is passionate about her store and has been in the designing business for more than 22 years. She was an independent designer who had always longed for a storefront, and when she heard of the development going on at West Glen, she “got on board.”

“My husband was retiring as CFO of Wells Fargo Financial, so I thought it might be good timing,” Young said. “He’s been very supportive, as has my family. My daughter-in-law actually gave up her career as a financial analyst at Northwest Airlines Corp. in Minneapolis to be my CFO and almost CEO. She basically runs the business, allowing the rest of the staff to pursue their talents.”

Trieste’s new showroom is reflective of the talent that Young has at the company. With three full-time employees and approximately six part-time employees, Young tries to let them express their own design techniques in the store. This variety of talent is what creates the fluidity of the showroom and its unique collection, Cross said.

“It’s like a little treasure hunt, and people seem to really like that,” she said. “We have old, new and everything in between. And that’s kind of the way people live.”
