The Polk County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday is expected to approve spending $1.7 million to install a new sound system at Wells Fargo Arena, which opened in July 2005. The arena’s sound system was originally installed when the facility was built, a county spokeswoman said. Spectra, which manages the arena, received a quote for a new sound system from the South Dakota-based Daktronics Electronics Co. more than a year ago. Daktronics will honor the quote, according to the spokeswoman. In addition, the supervisors will vote on spending $35,150 to repair the escalator at Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center, also managed by Spectra. Spectra originally had requested $607,350 from the 2019-20 capital improvements project budget. The requests for money to pay for the escalator repairs and to install a new sound system are in addition to the original request. The county owns the Iowa Events Center, which includes Wells Fargo, the convention center and Hy-Vee Hall. The county has a lease agreement with Spectra to manage the facilities. Money that Polk County receives annually from Spectra is put in a fund specifically designated for capital improvement projects at the  Iowa Events Center.
