Skosh Design opened in the East Village Square live/work lofts last week.

Carrie Hoffnagle creates jewelry from sterling silver, niobium, plastic and other materials, priced anywhere from $10 to $1,200 to appeal to a wide client base. Her husband, Carl, plans to sell some of his own work (which he wouldn’t specify) later this year, while continuing his freelance graphic design business.

Both graduated from Iowa State University in 2006 and worked in Ames until this January, when they decided to pursue their interests. Carrie Hoffnagle still works at 2AU Ltd. in Valley Junction.

They were attracted to Des Moines for the larger population base and downtown area. The live/work lofts also allowed them to combine their living, studio and store space into one rent. “I can’t say enough how much that’s helped make it a possibility, because of the low overhead,” Carl Hoffnagle said.

Meanwhile, a few blocks away, an upscale nightclub in the basement of the Teachout Building at 500 E. Locust St. is scheduled to open the first week of August.

First, the business had to apply for a series of permits, including a special sidewalk permit from the city of Des Moines, because part of the underground space extends under the sidewalk. “It’s probably the first and only here in Des Moines,” said Kirk Blunck, owner of the building.

The basement was formerly the site of the East Des Moines Men’s Club. The new club will be run by Kevin Wahlert, manager of the bars at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, and Jerrad Atkin, manager of the Locust Tap.
