A New York company plans to enter the Greater Des Moines senior independent living market with projects in Ankeny and Indianola. Calamar Enterprises Inc. has proposed a 116-unit development for the Summercrest Hills area in Indianola. A similar development, geared for people 55 and older, is proposed for Ankeny. Tim Locher, managing principal at Blue Forest Land Group, which is representing Calamar Enterprises, said the projects are made up of for-rent units with one-year leases. Rents will range from $800 to $900 per month for one-bedroom apartments and around $1,000 for two-bedroom units. Calamar enterprises is based in Wheatfield, near Buffalo. In the last two years, it has expanded west of the Mississippi River with projects in the Kansas City and Omaha markets. Locher said the company hopes to do “one or two” more projects in Greater Des Moines.
